About

A highly toxic aromatic amine and proven human carcinogen. Its use in cosmetics is absolutely prohibited, and it is one of the most stringently regulated compounds in consumer products.

Benzidine (4,4'-diaminobiphenyl) is an aromatic amine that is a confirmed human carcinogen (IARC Group 1), associated with bladder cancer and other malignancies. It is readily absorbed through the skin and was historically used in dye synthesis (notably in azo dyes, which can metabolize back to benzidine). EU regulations ban benzidine and its compounds from cosmetic products entirely. It is one of the most stringently prohibited substances in cosmetic regulation, with zero tolerance for its presence in consumer products.

Skin benefits

  • No cosmetic or skin benefits — purely a toxic carcinogenic industrial chemical

Known concerns

  • EU banned in cosmetics (Annex II)
  • Confirmed human carcinogen (IARC Group 1)
  • Readily absorbed through skin
  • Metabolized from certain azo dyes — risk of indirect exposure
  • Severe acute toxicity at high doses
