About
A diester emollient derived from azelaic acid and 2-ethylhexanol, commonly used in skin care formulations for its lightweight, non-greasy moisturizing properties and excellent skin compatibility.
Bis-Ethylhexyl Azelate (also called diethylhexyl azelate) is a diester of azelaic acid with 2-ethylhexanol. It is a widely-used emollient in both skin care and color cosmetic products, valued for its excellent spreading properties and light, dry skin feel. The 2-ethylhexyl group is a branched alcohol that imparts hydrophobicity while remaining metabolizable. Azelaic acid in its esterified form loses its active properties (anti-acne, anti-tyrosinase) but the ester itself is well-tolerated on skin. This compound is not restricted in EU cosmetics and has a strong safety record in dermal formulations.
