Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A glycol ether solvent historically used in cosmetic formulations for its excellent solvency and penetration-enhancing properties, now less common due to reformulation trends toward safer solvent systems.
Bis-methoxyethoxy methane (dimethylene glycol dimethyl ether) is a glycol ether solvent once used in cosmetic formulations, particularly nail polish removers and hair dye carriers. It has good solvency for a wide range of organic compounds and can enhance penetration of other ingredients through the skin. However, glycol ethers as a class have faced reformulation pressure due to reproductive and developmental toxicity concerns with some specific glycol ethers (such as 2-methoxyethanol and 2-ethoxyethanol, which are banned). This specific ether has a comparatively better safety profile, but regulatory scrutiny remains.
Known concerns
- Ether solvent - potential for skin drying
- May enhance penetration of other ingredients
- Not commonly used in modern cosmetics
