About
Annatto seed — a traditional natural orange-red pigment (bixin/norbixin) with antioxidant activity. Generally gentle with a rare allergy signal.
Bixa orellana (annatto) seed contributes the apocarotenoids bixin and norbixin, used as a natural colorant (CI 75120, EU food color E160b) and for antioxidant support. Long food-additive history in Central and South America; EFSA has set an ADI. Annatto is one of the more commonly reported natural food colorant allergens, though incidence remains low. In cosmetics used at low pigment levels in balms, soaps, and sticks; CIR reviewed annatto-based colorants favorably.
