Avoid
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A highly toxic strychnine-related alkaloid sulfate from the Strychnos nux-vomica tree used as a pharmaceutical bitter stomachic and stimulant that carries extreme acute toxicity and is absolutely prohibited from cosmetic use.
Brucine Sulfate is the sulfuric acid salt of brucine, a Strychnos alkaloid structurally and mechanistically related to strychnine. Both are convulsant poisons acting on the spinal cord glycine receptors. Brucine has extreme acute oral toxicity (LD50 in rats ~1 mg/kg) and is not permitted in cosmetics under any circumstance. Even trace contamination from this compound would be dangerous.
Known concerns
- EU Annex II prohibited substance (extremely toxic alkaloid)
- Extreme acute oral and systemic toxicity
- Convulsant poison with no cosmetic application whatsoever
