C10-11 Isoparaffin is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Isoparaffins are saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons produced by hydrotreating petroleum fractions, resulting in a branched, acyclic alkane mixture (C10-11 chain length here). The branched structure prevents these molecules from packing into a crystalline lattice, keeping them liquid at room temperature. Hydrotreated petroleum derivatives of this type are reviewed by the SCCS under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009; they are considered safe for cosmetic use when fully hydrotreated and free of aromatic or olefinic impurities. The C10-11 range is moderately volatile and suitable for rinse-off and leave-on products alike. The source registry (CAS 64742-48-9) confirms hydrotreated heavy naphtha origin.
Skin benefits
- Provides exceptionally light, non-greasy emolliency
- Excellent solvent for oil-soluble actives in skin-care and sunscreen formulations
Known concerns
- Petroleum-derived — requires full refining history to confirm removal of aromatics and olefins
- Inhalation risk in sprayable formulations — particle size must be controlled
