About
A long-chain alkyl ester of stearic acid — acts as an emollient and viscosity-controlling agent that gives formulations a rich, waxy texture and helps lock in moisture.
C30-50 Alkyl Stearate is the ester of stearic acid (octadecanoic acid) with a branched or mixed C30-50 long-chain aliphatic alcohol. The very long alkyl chain gives this ingredient high hydrophobicity and a waxy, substantive film-forming character on skin. It functions as a skin-conditioning emollient and viscosity-increasing agent in cosmetic emulsions. The ingredient is CosIng-listed with no restrictions in EU Annexes. Stearic acid itself is a common, well-tolerated fatty acid, and the long-chain alcohol component similarly poses low concern.
Skin benefits
- Emollient — forms occlusive barrier reducing transepidermal water loss
- Viscosity-controlling — improves product texture and stability
Known concerns
- Very long alkyl chain — may feel heavy or waxy on skin in high concentrations
