About

A perfluoroalkyl (PFAS-related) quaternary ammonium compound used for its unique oil- and water-repellent properties, but subject to significant regulatory scrutiny in the EU.

This compound contains a C4-18 perfluoroalkyl chain attached via a thiohydroxypropyl spacer to a trimonium chloride. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are under intense regulatory review in the EU. The European Commission has proposed restrictions on PFASs under REACH, and several PFAS compounds are listed as candidates for restriction. The specific C4-18 chain length places this in a category facing increasing regulatory pressure. Use in cosmetic products may be subject to future restriction.

Skin benefits

  • Provides unique water- and oil-repellent conditioning
  • Creates durable film on skin and hair

Known concerns

  • PFAS-related substance — EU REACH restriction candidate
  • Environmental persistence and bioaccumulation concern
  • Potential regulatory phase-out under EU Green Deal chemicals policy
