Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
An ester of stearic acid with very long C40-60 alkyl alcohols — an extremely hydrophobic emollient that provides strong barrier protection and a rich, protective skin feel.
C40-60 Alkyl Stearate is a long-chain alkyl ester of stearic acid, where the alkyl component is a mixture of C40 to C60 aliphatic alcohols. These very long alkyl chains make the ingredient highly lipophilic and substantive, forming a stable occlusive layer on the skin surface. It is used in cosmetic emulsions for its texture-modifying and barrier-protective properties. Structurally analogous to behenyl stearate and other long-chain fatty esters, which have well-established safety profiles. No EU restriction or bans apply.
Skin benefits
- Strong occlusive emollient — excellent barrier protection
- Helps reduce transepidermal water loss for dry/chapped skin
Known concerns
- Very heavy/waxy feel — not suitable for lightweight or oily-skin formulations
