About

A calcium-bridged modified starch (with isododecenylsuccinate groups) used as a soft-focus oil-absorbing powder in makeup. Generally well-tolerated.

Calcium starch isododecenylsuccinate (CAS 194810-88-3) is a modified starch in which hydroxyl groups are esterified with isododecenylsuccinic anhydride and the resulting acid groups are neutralized with calcium. The branched hydrocarbon tails give the starch oil-absorbing and soft-focus properties, while keeping it dispersible in cosmetic formulations. Used in foundations, primers, mattifying powders, and color cosmetics. Modified starches are broadly considered safe in cosmetics; specific public toxicology for this exact chemistry is limited. As with all fine powders, eye and respiratory irritation can occur in loose-powder applications.
