About
Cultured callus tissue from Camellia petelotii, an ornamental tea family plant, used as a novel skin-conditioning ingredient in high-end cosmetic formulations.
Camellia petelotii is a lesser-known Camellia species native to China; the cultivated callus form is grown in sterile in vitro conditions. Camellia species are well established in cosmetics (e.g. C. sinensis in skincare, C. oleifera in haircare). The EU does not restrict Camellia-derived ingredients in Regulation 1223/2009. The callus form is considered safe following standard principles for cultured plant cells, analogous to other plant cell culture cosmetic ingredients.
Skin benefits
- Potential antioxidant activity from tea-family polyphenols
- Cultured cells may produce unique bioactive metabolites
Known concerns
- Novel ingredient with limited direct safety data specific to C. petelotii
- Standard patch testing advised for sensitive individuals
