About
The hydrocarbon fraction of candelilla wax — a vegan, plant-derived structuring wax used to stiffen and add gloss to lipsticks and balms.
Candelilla Cera Hydrocarbons is the purified hydrocarbon fraction of candelilla wax, obtained from the Euphorbia cerifera shrub native to northern Mexico. Raw candelilla wax contains roughly 50% hydrocarbons (mostly hentriacontane), 20–30% esters, and smaller amounts of free acids and alcohols. The hydrocarbon fraction is favored as a hard, high-melting, glossy structurant in lipsticks, balms, solid fragrances, and mascaras, and is an accepted vegan substitute for beeswax. CIR has reviewed candelilla wax and considers it safe as used. Residual solvent and heavy-metal specifications matter for quality control; sensitization is uncommon.
