Cantharides refers to preparations from the blister beetle Cantharis vesicatoria containing cantharidin, a potent vesicant (blistering agent). Cantharidin is extremely toxic (H300 acute toxicity) and has no place in cosmetic formulations. It is prohibited under EU Annex II as a natural toxin. The use of cantharides in any consumer product is considered dangerous and is banned across virtually all jurisdictions.
