Canthaxanthin is a cosmetic ingredient. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Canthaxanthin (CI 40850) is a keto-carotenoid used as a color additive in cosmetic formulations, imparting orange to red hues. It is approved as a cosmetic colorant in the EU. However, oral ingestion of high doses has been associated with canthaxanthin-induced retinopathy (gold pigment deposits in the retina) in some individuals. For topical cosmetic use, the exposure is significantly lower and considered acceptable when properly formulated.
