About
A water-dispersible silicone emollient — light, silky feel and good for water-based formulations.
Carboxydecyl trisiloxane is a short-chain siloxane — three silicon atoms — modified with a decyl-carboxylic-acid tail. The carboxylate group makes it water-dispersible, and the trisiloxane backbone gives the characteristic silky slip of silicones. It functions as a skin-conditioning emollient and spread agent, lighter than dimethicone and useful in water-based or lotion formulas. Silicones as a class are considered very well tolerated on skin; the main modern caveat is environmental persistence of low-MW cyclic siloxanes (D4, D5, D6), though this linear-functional material is distinct from those. Independent cosmetic-specific toxicology on this INCI is limited.
Function
Skin benefits
- Silicone emollient with carboxylic-acid tail — water-dispersible
- Smooth, silky skin/hair feel
- Low occlusivity compared with heavier silicones
- Compatible with water-based formulas
Known concerns
- Siloxane environmental persistence — class caveat
- Limited independent cosmetic toxicology
- Low-MW siloxanes (D4/D5) restricted in EU — this is a different material but part of wider siloxane review
