About
Enzyme-rich papaya seed powder that gently exfoliates and renews skin
Carica papaya seed powder is derived from papaya seeds which contain papain (a proteolytic enzyme) and carpaine (a toxic alkaloid). Papain is used in cosmetic exfoliants but can cause significant skin irritation if not properly inactivated or buffered. Carpaine has been documented as toxic in animal studies at higher doses. While the seed powder form has lower concentrations of these compounds than extracts, the documented bioactive and potentially toxic constituents result in a lower safety score. EU CosIng has entries noting some restrictions for papaya-derived ingredients.
Skin benefits
- Papain has exfoliating properties when properly buffered
- Contains fatty acids and protein
- Traditional use in skin-care with proper processing
Known concerns
- Papain can cause significant skin irritation and sensitization
- Carpaine is a documented toxic alkaloid
- Requires careful processing to inactivate problematic compounds
- Known irritant potential if improperly formulated
