About
A terpene epoxide derived from carvone, occurring naturally in caraway and dill seed essential oils. Used as a fragrance and flavoring material with moderate regulatory attention in the EU due to epoxide structure and allergenic potential.
Carvone oxide is the epoxide of carvone, a monoterpenoid ketone found in caraway (Carum carvi) and dill oils. Like other terpene epoxides, it falls under IFRA guidelines and EU fragrance allergen guidance. Epoxides can be metabolically activated to sensitizing intermediates. It is not listed in EU Annex II (prohibited) but may be restricted in Annex III if specific concerns arise. Used at low concentrations in fragrance formulations.
Skin benefits
- Natural fragrance material from caraway
- Provides characteristic spiced aroma to products
Known concerns
- Epoxide structure may be metabolically activated to sensitizing agents
- Fragrance allergen concern — IFRA monitoring applies
- Limited data on chronic dermal exposure
- May require IFRA declaration at >0.01%
