About
Denatured alcohol similar to SD Alcohol 1, used as a cosmetic solvent and antimicrobial with comparable drying and irritant properties.
CD Alcohol 19 is ethyl alcohol denatured with MIBK, nitropropane, or methyl n-butyl ketone co-solvent, further denatured with kerosene, deodorized kerosene, gasoline, or heptane to prevent inhalation misuse. The multiple co-denaturants make it unsuitable for cosmetic leave-on products at high concentrations, though it is permitted in rinse-off formulations within EU Regulation 1223/2009. The additional hydrocarbon denaturants introduce more concern than SD Alcohol 1 for sensitive or compromised skin types.
Skin benefits
- Antimicrobial preservation in rinse-off formulations
- Effective solvent for oil-based ingredients
- Quick-dry aesthetic properties
Known concerns
- More complex denaturation mixture – hydrocarbon co-denaturants add irritation potential
- Drying effect on skin with repeated use
- Volatile organic compound (VOC) concerns
- Not suitable for leave-on products at elevated concentrations
