About
Celestolide is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Celestolide (CAS 13171-00-1, also known as 4-acetyl-1,1-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-naphthalene or with trade name Galaxolide follow-on) is a synthetic polycyclic musk. Nitro musks were among the first synthetic musks used in fragrance and were subject to EU restriction when analytical data showed environmental persistence and detection in human breast milk and adipose tissue. Under EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex III, certain nitro musks are restricted to trace levels in fine fragrance applications. The score of 62 reflects this restricted-but-not-banned status. It is not a sensitiser of primary concern but faces regulatory pressure due to environmental PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic) properties.
Skin benefits
- Provides lasting musk base note in fragrance formulations
Known concerns
- EU Annex III restricted — permitted at trace levels only in cosmetic products
- Environmental PBT concern — detected in human tissue and breast milk
- Lipophilic — bioaccumulation potential
- Fragrance industry moving toward non-nitro alternatives
- Not a primary skin sensitiser but regulatory concern remains
