About
Ceteth-5 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
CETETH-5 is a nonionic surfactant consisting of cetyl alcohol (C16) condensed with approximately 5 moles of ethylene oxide. In the EU, ethoxylated surfactants are permitted under the Cosmetics Regulation but must meet purity thresholds; residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane are regulated under Annex II (banned above trace levels). Low EO-degree ethoxylated surfactants like this one carry a moderate irritation potential compared to higher EO analogues.
Skin benefits
- Effective oil-in-water emulsifier for stable cream formulations
- Imparts smooth, non-greasy feel to skin care products
Known concerns
- Potential for residual ethylene oxide contamination (regulated in EU as hazardous impurity)
- Potential for 1,4-dioxane contamination (EU Annex II banned > 10 ppm in cosmetic products)
- Low EO degree may increase skin irritation potential in sensitive individuals
