About
A water-soluble salt form of chitosan (CAS 66267-52-5). Acts as a cationic film former and conditioner on hair and skin. Generally low-irritation but shellfish-derived.
Chitosan formate is the formic-acid salt of chitosan, the partially deacetylated polysaccharide from crustacean shells. Formic-acid salification makes the polymer water-soluble, which is useful for clear gels, sprays and hair fixatives where raw chitosan would be insoluble. It is a high-molecular-weight cationic polymer with low systemic absorption and good substantivity to hair. No EU restrictions; CIR has reviewed chitosan family polymers with a safe-as-used conclusion. Main caveats are animal origin (non-vegan) and the mildly acidic formate counter-ion.
Function
Skin benefits
- Water-soluble cationic film former
- Hair and skin conditioning
- Biodegradable polysaccharide
Known concerns
- Shellfish-derived — not vegan
- Formate counterion contributes mild acidity
- Sparse leave-on safety data
