About
A cationic polysaccharide derivative of chitosan with a hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium substituent, providing film-forming, moisture-binding, and antimicrobial properties.
Hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a water-soluble cationic derivative of chitosan (deacetylated chitin), modified with a 2-hydroxy-3-(trimethylammonio)propyl substituent. The substitution confers permanent cationic charge across a broad pH range, unlike basic chitosan which loses charge below pH ~6. Chitosan itself is listed in CosIng with no restrictions. The hydroxypropyl linker improves solubility and reduces the typical英国 of unmodified chitosan. Used in moisturizers, hair products, and wound-care formulations for its film-forming and antimicrobial properties.
Skin benefits
- Strong moisture-binding (humectant) properties
- Film-forming barrier on skin surface
- Mild antimicrobial activity from cationic nature
- Improves skin smoothness and softness
Known concerns
- Possible residual chitin or protein impurities from chitosan source
- Mild eye irritation at high concentrations
- Skin drying if overused without adequate humectant combination
