About
A chitosan derivative paired with salicylic acid, combining the skin-conditioning benefits of chitosan with the exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties of salicylate.
Chitosan Salicylate is the salt formed between chitosan (a deacetylated chitin derivative) and salicylic acid. Chitosan is a cationic polysaccharide with film-forming and conditioning properties; salicylate adds keratolytic (exfoliating) and anti-inflammatory activity. The salt form moderates the direct acidity of salicylic acid, potentially reducing irritation. BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) is a related compound with some concern; salicylates carry restrictions under EU Annex III for certain product types and concentrations. Not a banned ingredient. Skin sensitization is possible in aspirin-sensitive individuals.
Skin benefits
- Exfoliation (keratolytic)
- Anti-inflammatory
- Skin conditioning from chitosan
Known concerns
- BHA-related concerns (salicylate is a BHA derivative)
- EU Annex III restrictions apply in some product types
- Aspirin/salicylate allergy risk
- Skin irritation at high concentrations
