About
Also known as Sudan I or C.I. 12010, this azo dye is a known sensitizer and potential carcinogen, banned in cosmetics in most jurisdictions.
CI Solvent Yellow 14 (CAS 842-07-9), commonly known as Sudan I, is a synthetic azo dye that has been extensively studied for safety concerns. It is listed in EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II as a prohibited substance for cosmetic use. Multiple studies have demonstrated that Sudan I can be metabolized to carcinogenic aromatic amines, and it has been classified by IARC as a Group 3 carcinogen (not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans) with sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in animal studies. The EU's ban in cosmetics is consistent with international efforts to eliminate this dye from consumer products. Sudan I has also been banned in food applications in the EU.
