About
A naturally occurring ester of cinnamyl alcohol and cinnamic acid, used as a fragrance ingredient providing sweet, balsamic notes reminiscent of storax and benzoin.
Cinnamyl Cinnamate is found naturally in storax resin and benzoin Sumatra. It is listed in the EU cosmetic fragrance allergen database as a contact allergen requiring declaration (but not banned or restricted) when present above 0.01% in leave-on products. The compound is structurally distinct from cinnamyl alcohol and cinnamaldehyde—the two most well-known cinnamon-derived allergens. While sensitization potential exists, it is considered lower than cinnamaldehyde. EU IFRA standards permit its use with a recommended maximum that reflects its moderate sensitization profile.
Known concerns
- EU fragrance allergen declaration requirement in leave-on products
- Potential skin sensitization in susceptible individuals
- Structural cousins cinnamyl alcohol and cinnamaldehyde are stronger sensitizers
