About
A cis-configured unsaturated pentenol with a mild green-floral odor used as a fragrance ingredient; the Z-alkene geometry is less stable and may oxidize more readily than the trans isomer.
Cis-2-Pentenol (Z-3-penten-1-ol) is an unsaturated aliphatic alcohol with a characteristic green, floral odor. The cis (Z) double bond configuration imparts different olfactory properties than the trans isomer. Alkenyl alcohols can oxidize under air exposure to form hydroperoxides, which are known skin sensitizers.
Skin benefits
- Used as a fragrance material providing green, slightly floral notes
Known concerns
- Alkenyl alcohol susceptible to air oxidation and hydroperoxide formation
- Mild irritant potential at high concentrations
- Limited specific toxicological safety data
