About
The so-called 'leaf aldehyde,' one of the most potent naturally occurring green-odorant compounds found in fresh-cut grass. Used at very low levels in fine fragrances for its intense fresh green character, but requires careful formulation due to its reactive aldehyde nature.
Cis-3-hexenal (also known as (Z)-hex-3-enal or leaf aldehyde) is a six-carbon unsaturated aldehyde with an intensely green, grassy odor. It is naturally produced in damaged plant leaves and is one of the most significant character-impact compounds for green notes in perfumery. The aldehyde functionality makes it reactive and potentially prone to oxidation and sensitization. IFRA has issued standards restricting its use to trace levels in finished products. The compound is not banned in the EU but requires careful handling.
Skin benefits
- Fragrance material; no documented skin conditioning benefits
Known concerns
- Skin sensitizer (aldehyde class)
- Reactive aldehyde — can oxidize and degrade in formulations
- IFRA recommended restrictions at trace levels
- Instability in air/light
