A variety of silicon dioxide (quartz) used as a gentle abrasive and mineral colorant in cosmetic formulations.
Citrine is a yellow variety of crystalline quartz (SiO2). Natural citrine is not restricted under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. The primary safety consideration is the potential for respirable crystalline silica if used in finely powdered form. Cosmetic-grade minerals are typically selected to minimize respirable fractions. Citrine contains trace iron giving it yellow color. Used in natural and mineral cosmetics as a gentle physical exfoliant and decorative colorant. Not to be confused with synthetic citrine used in jewelry.
