Lime/lemon fruit water — traditional toning hydrosol, but lime especially carries photosensitising furocoumarins, so caution in daytime leave-on products.
Citrus aurantifolia/Citrus limon fruit water is the aqueous steam distillate from lime and lemon fruit. It is used as a water-phase toning ingredient with mild astringent character. Citrus oils — especially lime oil — are well known for photosensitising furocoumarins (bergapten, limettin), which can cause phytophotodermatitis on sun-exposed skin. Hydrosols contain much lower levels than essential oils, but furanocoumarin content depends on how the material was prepared (cold-pressed vs steam-distilled). Citrus fruit waters also carry Annex III-listed fragrance allergens (limonene, linalool, citral). IFRA restricts cold-pressed citrus oils in leave-on products; steam-distilled fractions are more permissive.
