About
Cobalt Dichloride is a cosmetic ingredient. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Cobalt dichloride (CAS 7646-79-9) is a cobalt(II) salt that has been used in cosmetic formulations and as a humidity indicator. EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III restricts its use to concentrations below 0.1% as a constituent of substances or mixtures. Cobalt and cobalt compounds are known skin sensitizers and respiratory sensitizers. The compound is classified as a suspected carcinogen (H350i - inhalation) and is associated with hard metal lung disease in occupational settings. Cobalt dichloride is effectively restricted in cosmetic products due to the extensive safety concerns.
Known concerns
- Restricted to <0.1% in EU mixtures
- Skin and respiratory sensitizer
- Suspected carcinogen by inhalation (H350i)
- Cobalt allergy and contact dermatitis
- Potential for systemic cobalt exposure
