About

Cobalt Sulphate is a cosmetic ingredient. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Cobalt sulphate (CAS 10124-43-3) is a soluble cobalt salt used in various industrial applications and previously in cosmetic formulations as a drier component. EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III restricts its use to concentrations below 0.1% as a constituent of substances or mixtures. The compound carries extensive hazard statements including H302 (harmful if swallowed), H317 (may cause allergic skin reaction), H334 (may cause allergy or asthma symptoms if inhaled), H341 (suspected genetic defects), H350i (may cause cancer by inhalation), H360F (may damage fertility), H400/H410 (aquatic toxicity), and H372 (organ toxicity). Cobalt is a known skin and respiratory sensitizer, and cobalt exposure is associated with cardiomyopathy.

Known concerns

  • EU Annex III restricted - confirmed carcinogen by inhalation
  • Skin and respiratory sensitizer (H317/H334)
  • Reproductive toxicity (H360F)
  • Cardiomyopathy from systemic cobalt exposure
  • Aquatic toxicity (H400/H410)
