About
A surfactant derived from coconut oil morpholine with good cleaning and foaming properties, but carrying some potential for eye irritation.
Coco-morpholine oxide (also called cetyl morpholine oxide or related coco-alkyl morpholine derivatives) is an amine oxide surfactant used for its cleansing, foaming, and viscosity-controlling properties. It is listed in EU CosIng without specific restriction at typical use concentrations. However, amine oxide surfactants can be eye irritants at high concentrations, and rinse-off formulations are preferred. The coconut oil-derived alkyl chain provides good biodegradability.
Skin benefits
- Effective cleansing and foaming surfactant
- Viscosity-controlling properties improve formulation texture
Known concerns
- Potential eye irritation at high concentrations
- More suitable for rinse-off than leave-on formulations
- May be contaminated by nitrosamines if improperly processed
