About

A copper-ATP complex — a novel cosmetic active combining copper with the cellular energy molecule ATP. Novel; evidence thin.

Copper Adenosine Triphosphate is a metal-nucleotide coordination complex of copper with adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cellular energy currency. In cosmetics the rationale blends copper-peptide-style repair signaling with the metaphor of energizing skin metabolism. ATP itself is a universally-present biomolecule but has very poor stability in aqueous formulation (it hydrolyzes to ADP/AMP rapidly); the chelation with copper may improve shelf life. No CIR or SCCS review, and peer-reviewed cosmetic data is minimal. Copper at cosmetic use levels (typically 0.0001-0.01% of this complex) is unlikely to pose toxicity concern, but as a novel active it warrants default-cautious scoring.

Function

ANTIOXIDANT, SKIN CONDITIONING

Skin benefits

  • Copper-ATP complex — energy and cell-signaling metaphor
  • Possible skin-repair and conditioning claims
  • Novel cosmetic active

Known concerns

  • ATP is a cellular signaling molecule — pharmacological blurring
  • Copper can be a pro-oxidant at higher exposure
  • No CIR or SCCS review
  • Very limited public cosmetic safety data
  • Formulation stability challenging (ATP is labile)
