About
Leaf powder from the sago palm, a prehistoric plant used in traditional skincare and herbal preparations.
Cycas revoluta (sago palm) leaves contain the carcinogenic glucoside cycasin and the neurotoxin beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA). Cycasin is listed in EU Annex II (prohibited substances) in some contexts due to its genotoxicity and carcinogenicity. The presence of both cycasin and BMAA makes this ingredient particularly concerning for cosmetic use, as topical application of cyanogenic compounds poses absorption and systemic exposure risks that are not adequately characterised.
Known concerns
- EU Annex II cycasin concern (genotoxic carcinogen)
- BMAA neurotoxin
- carcinogenic compound
- significant safety concern for cosmetic use
