About
A humectant similar to caprylyl glycol — attracts water to the skin and also has some antimicrobial properties, making it useful as both a moisturizer and a mild preservative booster.
Cyclohexylglycerin (1,2-dihydroxycyclohexane-propane) is a diol humectant with a cyclohexyl substituent. Its mechanism is similar to other alkyl diols: it binds water and reduces water activity in formulations, inhibiting microbial growth. Cyclohexylglycerin is listed in CosIng as a skin-conditioning agent and humectant. It is structurally related to caprylyl glycol (octanediol) but with a cyclohexyl ring replacing an alkyl chain, giving it slightly different solubility characteristics. It has a good safety profile in cosmetic use.
Skin benefits
- Humectant — attracts and retains moisture in skin
- Mild antimicrobial activity — acts as preservative booster
Known concerns
- Mild eye irritation possible at high concentrations
- Generally well-tolerated but not suitable for lip/eye area at high concentration
