About
A fatty-chain propionate ester — a lightweight emollient with a mild fruity/waxy fragrance character.
Decyl propionate is the ester of decyl alcohol and propionic acid (CAS 5454-19-3). It is used both as a fragrance ingredient (adds a subtle fruity-waxy note) and as a lightweight emollient/skin-conditioning agent. As a simple fatty ester it is well tolerated on intact skin, with a low irritation and sensitization profile; it is within the fatty-ester class that CIR has broadly reviewed favorably. Like other mid-chain esters, it has mild comedogenic potential in acne-prone users at high percentages.
