About

A dialkyl (C22/C20) quaternary ammonium salt with two very long hydrophobic chains forming a highly substantive, water-repellent conditioning film.

Dibehenyl/diarachidyl dimonium chloride is a dialkyl quaternary ammonium where one alkyl is docosanyl (C22 behenyl) and the other is eicosanyl (C20 arachidyl), or a mixture thereof. The dual very-long-chain structure provides exceptional substantivity and water repellency, similar to behenyl alcohol-based conditioners. Not listed in EU CosIng Annexes II or III. The extremely hydrophobic nature raises comedogenicity and skin occlusion concerns in leave-on products. Used in intensive hair treatments and barrier formulations.

Skin benefits

  • Ultra-durable water-resistant conditioning film on hair
  • Barrier protection for compromised skin
  • Improvement of dry, brittle hair manageability

Known concerns

  • High comedogenic potential from extremely long hydrocarbon chains
  • Skin occlusion and pore-blocking risk in leave-on products
  • Limited safety data specific to this dialkyl structure
  • Potential build-up on hair with repeated use
