About

Dicoumarol (inn) is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Dicoumarol is a natural coumarin-derived anticoagulant originally identified as the hemorrhagic agent in spoiled sweet clover silage. Like phenprocoumon, it acts as a vitamin K epoxide reductase inhibitor, disrupting blood clotting. Under EU CosIng, anticoagulant compounds used as rodenticides are explicitly banned as cosmetic ingredients — they have no cosmetic utility and present severe systemic toxicity risk from dermal absorption. The compound appears in Annex II as a prohibited substance with no established safe cosmetic use.

Known concerns

  • Potent anticoagulant — severe bleeding risk from dermal exposure
  • Annex II prohibited — no cosmetic use permitted
  • Vitamin K antagonist mechanism with systemic toxicity
  • CMR classification for anticoagulant rodenticides
