About
A naphthalenedicarboxylate diester (NOT an ortho-phthalate) used as a glossy, light emollient. Generally safe; less data than ortho-phthalate ester family.
Diethylhexyl 2,6-naphthalate is the di(2-ethylhexyl) ester of naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid. Importantly, it is structurally distinct from the endocrine-disrupting ortho-phthalates (DEHP, DBP, etc.) — the carboxylate groups sit on a naphthalene ring at the 2,6 positions, which does not yield the planar phthalate metabolites of toxicological concern. It is used in cosmetics as a high-refractive-index emollient and UV-filter solubilizer in sunscreens, color cosmetics, and lip products. CIR has reviewed alkyl esters of polycyclic aromatic acids in the cosmetic-use class as safe, with no CMR or endocrine flags identified.
