Skin-conditioning emollient ester that gives products a smooth, non-greasy feel.
Dihexyl fumarate is the diester of fumaric acid (a trans-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid) with n-hexanol. The trans-alkene double bond in fumaric acid results in a rigid molecular geometry, differentiating it from the saturated diethyl succinate. Fumaric acid esters have been studied for dermatological applications; dihexyl fumarate is used as a skin conditioning agent in cosmetic formulations. Not specifically restricted under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. The compound is expected to have low acute toxicity based on structural analogy with other dialkyl fumarates which show favorable safety profiles in cosmetic use.
