About

A cholesterol-ester emollient — skin-biomimetic with a rich, occlusive feel. Low irritation; sourcing may be animal or plant depending on supplier.

Dihydrocholesteryl isostearate (CAS 87677-90-5) is the isostearic-acid ester of dihydrocholesterol (cholestanol) — a saturated cholesterol analog. Structurally biomimetic to skin sterol esters, it functions as a rich emollient and thickener in oil-phase formulations, often used in color cosmetics and anti-aging creams. Cholesteryl/cholestanyl esters are well-tolerated on skin with very low irritation and sensitization reports. CIR has reviewed several cholesterol-derived cosmetic ingredients and found them safe as used; no dedicated monograph on this specific ester but closely related cholesteryl esters have been cleared. Sourcing note: cholesterol historically came from lanolin or tallow; plant-origin (phytosterol-derived) routes exist but must be specified.

Skin benefits

  • Skin-biomimetic cholesterol-ester emollient
  • Supports barrier lipid feel
  • Low irritation and sensitization profile

Known concerns

  • Animal-derived cholesterol feedstock if not plant-sourced
  • Expected low risk at cosmetic use levels
  • Limited dedicated SCCS/CIR review
