About
An ethoxylated derivative of dihydrocholesterol — used as a skin-conditioning emollient in cosmetics. The ethoxylation makes it more water-dispersible than plain dihydrocholesterol.
Dihydrochoeth-15 ( Cholestan-3-ol, ethoxylated, 15 mol EO) is derived from dihydrocholesterol (cholestanol) via ethoxylation. It functions as a nonionic emulsifier and skin-conditioning agent. The ethoxylation degree of ~15 moles EO makes it hydrophilic enough for use in o/w emulsions. Limited specific toxicological data is available, and it is not specifically regulated in EU Annexes. As a cholesterol derivative, it is structurally benign, but ethoxylation raises the same impurity concerns as other ethoxylated ingredients.
Skin benefits
- Cholesterol-based — skin-identical emollient properties
- Provides smooth, non-greasy skin feel
Known concerns
- Limited specific toxicological data
- Standard ethoxylation impurity concerns (1,4-dioxane, ethylene oxide)
