About
A mild esterquat conditioning agent formed from coconut amine and two oleic acid molecules, providing softening and emulsifying properties.
Dihydroxyethyl cocamine dioleate is a diester of dihydroxyethyl cocoamine with two oleic acid molecules, forming an esterquat-type conditioning agent. Esterquats are widely used in hair conditioning products as they provide excellent softening while being more biodegradable than traditional quaternary ammonium compounds. EU Cosmetics Regulation does not specifically restrict this ingredient. The ester bond can be hydrolysed under strongly alkaline conditions, making it more suitable for rinse-off than highly alkaline formulations.
Skin benefits
- Provides excellent fabric and skin softening
- Improves shine and manageability of hair
- Acts as an emulsifier in cosmetic formulations
Known concerns
- Contains oleic acid — may become rancid if product preservation is inadequate
- Ester bond susceptible to hydrolysis in highly alkaline formulations
