About

A diisobutyl ester of maleic acid. Reactive double bond and sensitization signals make it a poor fit for broad cosmetic use.

Diisobutyl maleate (CAS 14234-82-3) is the diisobutyl ester of maleic acid. Unlike saturated emollient esters, the maleate structure contains a reactive alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl (a Michael acceptor) that can react with skin proteins and nucleophiles. GHS notifications for this substance commonly include skin and eye irritation and skin sensitization (H317) classifications; it is better known as a plasticizer and reactive monomer than as a cosmetic emollient. There is no dedicated CIR monograph. When in doubt, the reactive-unsaturation plus sensitization signals push toward Moderate/Caution rather than green.
