About

DIMETHYL IMIDAZOLIDINONE is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulation. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Dimethyl imidazolidinone (also known as DMH hydantoin or 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone) is a cyclic urea derivative used as a preservative in cosmetic formulations. Like other hydantoin derivatives, it can slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde during storage, which triggers EU restrictions under Annex II (substances which must not form part of cosmetic products) if formaldehyde release exceeds threshold limits. EU Regulation 2023/1499 requires labeling of formaldehyde-releasing substances. Widely restricted in leave-on products and limited to low concentrations in rinse-off formulations.

Known concerns

  • Formaldehyde-releasing agent
  • Skin sensitization risk
