About
Chinese wild yam root — a traditional botanical rich in mucilage and diosgenin. Good for hydration; claims of topical hormonal effect are oversold.
Dioscorea oppositifolia (also written D. opposita) root is a Dioscoreaceae yam species widely used in East Asian food and traditional medicine. It contains diosgenin (a steroidal sapogenin that the pharmaceutical industry uses as a starting material for steroid synthesis), steroidal saponins, and mucilaginous polysaccharides. In cosmetics it is used as a skin-conditioning and soothing ingredient, primarily via its hydrating mucilage. Claims that diosgenin provides "natural progesterone" or similar hormonal effects topically are not supported by pharmacokinetic data — humans lack the enzymatic pathway to convert it. No GHS classification, no EU cosmetic restrictions. Generally well-tolerated.
