About

A first-generation antihistamine drug (Benadryl). Topical use causes documented contact dermatitis and is regulated as a drug, not a cosmetic.

Diphenhydramine HCl (CAS 147-24-0) is a first-generation H1 antihistamine sold systemically as Benadryl and topically in some OTC anti-itch creams in the US. In the EU it is regulated as a medicinal product, not a cosmetic ingredient, and has no Cosmetics Regulation authorisation. Topical use is well documented to cause contact dermatitis and photoallergic dermatitis, paradoxically worsening the itch it is marketed to treat. Pediatric systemic toxicity has been reported when the drug was applied to large areas of broken skin. Cosmetic presence would either be illegal (EU) or cross-over into OTC drug territory (US) and is outside cosmetic safety frameworks.
