About
Dipteryx odorata (Tonka bean) seed water — a fragrant botanical water with a sweet, vanilla-like scent used in perfumery and skincare.
Dipteryx odorata (tonka bean) seed water is a steam-distillate aqueous extract of tonka bean seeds. Tonka beans naturally contain high levels of coumarin, which is listed in EU Annex III of Regulation 1223/2009 with restrictions: maximum 0.001% (10 mg/kg) in finished cosmetic products for leave-on and rinse-off products. This restriction significantly limits the usable coumarin concentration from tonka bean extracts, making the seed water form the preferred approach to stay within regulatory limits.
Skin benefits
- Contains natural coumarin with anticoagulant properties

- Contains antioxidant vanillin
Known concerns
- EU Annex III restricted — coumarin limited to 0.001% (10 mg/kg) in finished cosmetic products
- Hepatotoxicity concern at high doses
- Not suitable for uncontrolled use at high concentrations
