About

A soy-derived secondary fatty amine — conditioning agent with nitrosamine-formation concerns in unformulated systems.

Disoyamine (CAS 68783-23-3) is a secondary amine derived from hydrogenated soybean fatty acids. In cosmetics it serves as a cationic conditioning intermediate and anti-static agent. As a secondary amine it can, under certain formulation conditions (presence of nitrite or N-nitrosating agents), form N-nitrosodialkylamines — a flag the SCCS applies to fatty secondary/tertiary amines generally. CIR has reviewed related fatty amines with restrictions on nitrosating conditions. Aquatic toxicity of long-chain fatty amines is elevated. Properly formulated and quenched, it can be used safely, but the raw ingredient warrants caution.

Skin benefits

  • Cationic conditioning agent derived from soy fatty amines
  • Hair-softening and anti-static
  • Used as intermediate for milder surfactants

Known concerns

  • Long-chain secondary fatty amines can form trace nitrosamines in formulation
  • Possible skin and eye irritation at higher levels
  • Biodegradability and aquatic-toxicity concerns typical of fatty amines
