About

Distillates (petroleum), Heavy Steam-cracked is a cosmetic ingredient. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Heavy steam-cracked petroleum distillates are complex mixtures of hydrocarbons produced by thermal cracking processes. These streams contain significant quantities of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some of which are carcinogenic. EU REACH restrictions apply to PAH content in consumer products, and the EU Cosmetics Regulation restricts such petroleum-derived streams at ≥0.1% in cosmetic products. The steam-cracking process produces higher concentrations of unsaturated and aromatic compounds compared to other refinery streams.

Known concerns

  • Contains carcinogenic PAHs
  • Environmental hazard H400/H410
  • Petroleum stream complexity
  • Restricted ≥0.1% in EU cosmetics
